ODNR to remove trees and brush from two Summit County dams

Additional repair work to be completed along the East Reservoir dam

COLUMBUS, OH—Maintenance and repair work at East Reservoir and Tuscarawas Diversion dams will begin this week, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

Trees and brush will be removed from both structures because their root systems can alter and weaken the soil structure, which may impact the dams' structural integrity and hinder routine inspections. Additional repair work, which includes replacing two gate operators and a corroded walkway, will also be performed at East Reservoir dam.

The dams, owned by ODNR, are located at Portage Lakes Drive and Harrington Road. Drivers are asked to use caution, especially along Portage Lakes Drive, while repairs are carried out at the East Reservoir dam.

Originally approved in April 2010, construction was delayed in order to avoid negative impacts to potential Indiana bat habitat within certain tree species. The work, performed by Less Contracting of Salem, Ohio, should be complete by late November.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
