A total of 25 organizations will receive grant assistance, ranging from $2,236 to $30,000, which will support local jobs and boating safety education programs.
COLUMBUS, OH– Next year Ohioans of all ages will have numerous opportunities to participate in community boating safety education programs statewide because of funding assistance from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft.
A total of 25 organizations will receive grant assistance, ranging from $2,236 to $30,000, which will support local jobs and boating safety education programs.
Grant award recipients include 15 organizations across northeast Ohio, five in central and north-central Ohio, four in southwest Ohio and one in southeast Ohio. A complete listing of grant award recipients, Ohio’s boating programs and boating facilities may be found online at www.ohiodnr.com/watercraft.
Boating Safety Education grants are funded by recreational boaters through the Waterways Safety Fund, which is administered by the Division of Watercraft. The fund is comprised of a share of the state motor fuel tax, watercraft registration and titling fees, and funding from the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Division of Watercraft is mandated by state law to provide boating education programs. To accomplish its mission, the division provides a variety of funding assistance to local communities and organizations. In 2010, approximately 13,000 Ohioans successfully completed an approved boating safety education program. More Ohioans participated in various boating skills programs, such as basic canoe, kayak and sailing classes, offered by the division’s boating education partners.
Ohio law requires any person born on or after January 1, 1982 to be able to show proof they have successfully completed a boating safety education course which is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. Dedicated to providing education assistance through innovative approaches, the Division of Watercraft has helped establish an Ohio boating safety education system which has led to a significant reduction in boating-related fatalities during its 50 years of service.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
