COLUMBUS, OH - Mark Popichak, an Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) service forester in north eastern Ohio, recently received the Ohio Forestry Association’s 2011 Outstanding Individual in Government Service award.

This award recognizes a public servant for outstanding effort in the field of forestry-related conservation work.

“I am proud of Mark for his hard work and the professional manner in which he represents the ODNR Division of Forestry when he interacts with the logging community, peers and private landowners,” said Mark Wilthew, service forestry coordinator for north central and north eastern Ohio. “Mark consistently is our districts’ lead service forester working with Master Loggers and the Northeast Ohio Loggers Chapter, and he continually promotes logging BMPs and other essential sustainable forestry practices to private woodland owners in our region.”

“Mark was a founding member of the Northeast Ohio Loggers Chapter back in 1998,” said Robert Boyles, chief of the Ohio Division of Forestry. “He has spent countless hours in training, education and community service through the chapter and in representing the division in the Ohio Master Logger program.”

Throughout most of his career, Mark has been active in the Northeast Ohio Loggers Chapter where he has held the chair three different times – 1998/99, 2002/03, and 2005/06.  He was the chapter’s first vice chairman.  Mark has been a six-year presenter at the forestry station of the Quad County Envirothon.  He has been a presenter and/or an organizer at many logger recertification classes, field days and workshops, including the BMP Workshop for Soil & Water Conservation District personnel.  He has done many sessions for train the trainer for the eight-hour BMP Master Logger Class.  Mark is also a member of two watershed groups, the Pymatuning/Shenango and the Grand River.

Mark works out of the ODNR Division of Forestry office in Middlefield, and has been a service forester to landowners in north eastern Ohio for more than 31 years.
