COLUMBUS, OH - Jeremy Scherf, an Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) service forester in eastern Ohio, recently received the American Tree Farm System’s (ATFS) Bronze Hard Hat award.

This award recognizes a tree farm inspector who has certified at least 25 new Tree Farms. A Certified Tree Farm is a privately owned forest managed to produce timber, with added benefits of improved wildlife habitat, water quality, recreation, and scenic values. Some public ownerships are also certified as Tree Farms.

“I am proud of Jeremy for the hard work he puts into the certification process of Ohio Tree Farms and for his sincere desire to help Ohio’s forest landowners,” said Lee Crocker, private lands forestry administrator for the Ohio Division of Forestry.

“Jeremy’s efforts in certifying Ohio Tree Farms are an important part of improving Ohio’s woodlands and the state’s $15 billion wood industry,” said Robert Boyles, chief of the Ohio Division of Forestry.

The ODNR Division of Forestry and the Ohio Forestry Association jointly sponsor the Ohio Tree Farm Committee, which is a state committee of the American Forest Foundation’s ATFS.

Throughout his career, Jeremy has been active in the Ohio Tree Farm Program, serving as an inspector.  He was recognized as the Ohio Tree Farm Inspector of the Year in 2004 and subsequently earned the Regional Inspector of the Year award in 2005.  He was also the nominating forester for the 2004 Ohio Tree Farmer of the Year.  Jeremy has served as an officer with the East Central Ohio Forestry Association.  He is co-chairman for the Forestry & Wildlife Conservation Camp, and is very active with the Barnesville Area Reforestation Kommittee (BARK).  Jeremy graduated from The Ohio State University in 2000.

Jeremy works out of the ODNR Division of Forestry office in Cambridge, and has been a service forester to landowners in eastern Ohio for more than ten years.

Ohio grows more acres of trees than corn and soybeans combined. The ODNR Division of Forestry works to promote the wise use and sustainable management of Ohio’s public and private woodlands. To learn more about Ohio’s woodlands, visit ohiodnr.com/forestry.
