Successful volunteer efforts at Quail Hollow State Park were recognized with the Volunteer Park of the Year Award for small parks for 2010.
COLUMBUS, OH – Successful volunteer efforts at Quail Hollow State Park were recognized with the Volunteer Park of the Year Award for small parks for 2010, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

Quail Hollow was selected top among small state parks for the quality and variety of volunteer efforts. The Quail Hollow Volunteer Association includes members of the park’s astronomy club, camera club, herbal society, furnishings committee, wildlife center, and arts league. Regional Manager Bruce Carpenter and Assistant Manager Todd Metz accepted the award on behalf of the volunteers who contributed more than 11,457 hours at Quail Hollow in 2010.

The former estate of railroad magnate Harry Bartlett Stewart, Quail Hollow State Park features the Stewart family’s historic 40-room manor house, carriage house, and 700 acres of surrounding woodlands. Recent projects undertaken by the volunteers include replacing doors on the manor house and carriage house, raising funds for nature center displays, providing period furnishings for the manor house, and restoring the historic rock garden on the manor house grounds.

On an ongoing basis, the park’s volunteers plan and carry out a full schedule of special events, provide cross-country ski rentals in the winter, assist with nature programs, and operate the park’s gift shop.

In addition, local scouting groups helped clean debris from a creek bed, remove invasive species, and rebuild the roof of an historic wishing well. The Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Horseman’s Council built a bridge and helped maintain the park’s bridle trails.

Quail Hollow has been selected as the volunteer park of the year three times since the recognition award program was initiated. "Volunteers are crucial to sustaining the cultural and historical aspects of this unique park," said David Payne, chief of Ohio State Parks. "Quail Hollow is fortunate to have one of the first and most dedicated volunteer associations in our state park system."

Volunteer programs are available at most of Ohio’s 75 state parks, with opportunities for people of all ages and interests to participate. To become a park volunteer, contact a nearby state park.
