The lighthouse at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park is currently closed to tours due to the appearance of cracks in the structure.

Park grounds and light-keeper's house remain open to visitors

COLUMBUS, OH –The lighthouse at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park is currently closed to tours due to the appearance of cracks in the structure, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

The closure is being made to ensure safety for park visitors. It is expected to be temporary until an engineering consultant can further investigate the cracks and recommend a course of action.

The July 4 holiday weekend is a busy weekend for the historic Lake Erie lighthouse and tours are normally guided by volunteers with the Marblehead Historic Society. There will be no tours and visitors will not be permitted to enter the lighthouse.

Visitors are welcome to enjoy the park which remains open, see the lighthouse from the outside and enjoy the beautiful lake views. The light-keeper’s house, adjacent to the lighthouse, remains open as well and features historic displays and a tourist information center. For more information about the keeper’s house visit www.ohiodnr.com

The historic structure was built in 1819 and is the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes. The lighthouse and adjoining property were dedicated in 1998 as the 73rd Ohio State Park.

The ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at ohiodnr.com.
