COLUMBUS, OH – July has been designated National Parks and Recreation Month, and Ohioans are encouraged to mark the occasion at their local state parks, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
With five full weekends falling during the month, this July offers the best opportunity in years to devote an afternoon or a weekend to outdoor fun at a park. Ohio’s 75 state parks offer picnic areas with shelters and grills, and more than 1,000 miles of trails for hiking, as well as mountain biking and horseback riding. More than 70 lakes in state parks have sand swimming beaches, fishing access, and facilities for boating. For overnight stays, the state park system provides more than 9,000 campsites, along with vacation cottages and lodge rooms.
A number of special events are scheduled in July. Several state parks host community fireworks displays over the Independence Day holiday, including East Harbor, Grand Lake St. Marys, Indian Lake, and Hueston Woods. Later in the month, Christmas in July campouts, featuring holiday parades and visits with Santa, campsite decorating, holiday crafts for kids, potluck meals, movies and entertainment, are scheduled at more than a dozen state park campgrounds around the state. Dates and details for these events, along with a variety of heritage events, canoe outings and beach parties are listed in the calendar of events on the state parks website, www.ohiostateparks.org.
The National Recreation and Parks Association has designated July as National Parks and Recreation Month each year since 1985.
