COLUMBUS, OH – The onset of high heat and humidity conditions outdoors that are typical this time of year makes it especially a good idea to get out on the water, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
During a visit to ODNR’s exhibits area in the southeast corner of the Ohio Expo Center during this year’s Ohio State Fair, children at least 50 inches tall can enjoy a free paddling excursion on a kayak pond that is supervised by staff and volunteers with the ODNR Division of Watercraft. It’s one of many free activities enjoyed at the ODNR Park and Ohio State Fair which is open Wednesday through August 7. The kayak pond will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. during the fair.
The main focus of the kayak pond is to introduce children and their parents to boating safety and boating recreation opportunities. Paddlesports are among the fastest growing of all outdoors recreation activities. The registration of canoes and kayaks in Ohio has more than doubled during the past decade from 44,198 in 2000 to 89,859 in 2010 – an increase of 103%. An additional 6,416 canoes and kayaks were registered through commercial liveries in 2010.
Fair patrons often come to the 8-acre ODNR Park during the Ohio State Fair to enjoy its atmosphere, the free activities and to cool off as it is among the few shaded and grassy areas found on the fairgrounds.
More information about the ODNR exhibits and activities at the Ohio State Fair can be found online at www.ohiodnr.com.
