COLUMBUS, OH – The possibility of a sleepover at the Natural Resources Park Camper Village, located on the Ohio State Fairgrounds, was irresistible to Reese and Emma Kasich. Lucky for them, their mom, First Lady Karen Waldbillig Kasich, has an adventurous spirit and gave her “o.k.” to the camp out, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

Joining the first family earlier this week was Mrs. Kasich’s sister and her three children. The seven attended a concert on the fairgrounds, enjoyed the Midway then retired to the Natural Resources Park where they roasted hotdogs over a campfire, made S’mores, and took a night hike along a boardwalk featuring wildlife native to Ohio.

The governor’s twin daughters wrote an enthusiastic entry about their Natural Resources Park camping experience for the ODNR Explore the Outdoors blog:

“Did you know bobcats live in our state? You can also fish, Kayak and learn about our great state Parks … We watched a beaver build a dam in the dark (nocturnal!). We slept in a Yurt. (Google that one!) Mom and Aunt Kris used a camper.”

The 8-acre Natural Resources Park comes alive every summer during the 12 days of the Ohio State Fair. Outdoor and indoor nature exhibits focused on hands-on learning greet fairgoers as they tour the park-like setting located in the southeast corner of the fairgrounds. A 15-foot tall talking Smokey Bear knows every child’s name, bluegill and catfish swim in a nearby pond waiting to be caught, and the 500-seat amphitheater provides a variety of entertaining programs throughout the day, including a lumberjack show. The popular kayak pond lets adults and kids alike discover the fun of paddling while receiving expert instruction.

The Natural Resources Park is open daily during the run of the fair. Entry is free with state fair admission and all activities can be enjoyed at no cost. Visit ohiodnr.com for more information about the Natural Resources Park and check out the daily amphitheater schedule, which can be downloaded directly to your smart phone.

The Ohio State Fair is open now through Sunday, August 7. For more information about the state fair, go to ohiostatefair.com.

The ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at ohiodnr.com.
