A ceremonial groundbreaking kicked off construction of the new Lake Hope State Park dining lodge.
COLUMBUS, OH–A ceremonial groundbreaking kicked off construction of the new Lake Hope State Park dining lodge, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The original dining lodge, a popular destination for the community and visitors from around since 1950, was destroyed by a fire in 2006.

“The loss of that building was more than just nostalgia – it was a significant part of the area’s tourism economy,” said Ohio State Parks Chief David Payne. “We are proud to be breaking ground today on an innovative new building that once again will be a hub of activity in this area.”

The new dining lodge will be a 14,645-square foot, two-story wood and stone building – ideal for weddings, reunions and community meetings. It will feature a dining room and kitchen on the upper floor and a caterer’s kitchen and multi-purpose room on the lower level. The project cost is $4.6 million and will take a year to complete.

A public meeting was held in August 2010 for input from local residents before the design work was finalized. Recognizing the importance of the facility to the local residents, Chief Payne said that their input was critical to the project’s success.

Other positive aspects of the new lodge include the use of locally quarried stone and timber. The ODNR Division of Forestry is playing a key role in achieving the Silver LEED designation by supplying the locally harvested timber with Sustainable Forestry Initiative certification. Design work was completed by RVC Architects, Inc. of Athens and the general contractor is Stockmeister Construction of Jackson.

Participants in the event included Ohio Department of Natural Resources Assistant Director Scott Zody, Ohio State Parks Chief David Payne, Lake Hope State Park Manager Randy Zeisler, state and local officials, project architect, area partners, and members of the community.
