Simulated mine rescue scenarios challenge teams, October 4-5
COLUMBUS, OH — Southeastern Ohio miners from three different coal mines will flex their safety and rescue skills against teams from 12 other states at the 2011 National Mine Rescue, First-Aid, Bench and Preshift Competition at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
In addition to Ohio miners participating this week, more than a dozen Ohio mine safety inspectors with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Mineral Resources Management will be serving as judges and grounds crew for this 12-field event.
“Ohio is proud to host the 2011 National Mine Rescue Competition and our teams look forward to testing their own mine safety rescue skills against other states,” said Chief Lanny Erdos, Division of Mineral Resources Management. “Ohio’s miners and operators understand that mine safety training enhances mine safety and reinforces accident prevention programs, which strengthens Ohio’s mining industry.”
Two teams from Buckingham Coal Company and a team from Hopedale Mining, LLC will participate in a variety of skills competition. The team from Hopedale placed third in the Ohio Mine Safety Competition earlier this year and one of the Buckingham teams placed fifth.
More than 100 teams will compete in this biennial event sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration. The last time the competition was held in Columbus was 1951.
