ODNR will host two public meetings to discuss the latest progress in the state’s Lake Erie Shore Erosion Management Program.
SANDUSKY, OH – In an ongoing effort to assist owners of property along the Lake Erie coast, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will host two public meetings to discuss the latest progress in the state’s Lake Erie Shore Erosion Management Program.

The first meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 17, at the Blue and Gold Room at Kent State University-Ashtabula Campus, 3300 Lake Road West, Ashtabula. The Lake Erie Shore Erosion Management Program (LESEMP) recommendations for Ashtabula County will be reviewed and additional options for erosion control discussed.

The second meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 16, at the Huron Public Library, 333 Williams Street, Huron. The purpose of the meeting is to release the LESEMP recommendations for the Cedar Point to Vermilion region.

The LESEMP is being developed through a partnership between ODNR’s Office of Coastal Management, Division of Geological Survey, and Division of Wildlife.

LESEMP is offered as free technical assistance to property owners to identify the causes of erosion in their area and ways in which coastal erosion issues can be addressed based on “reaches.” The objective of the reach-based approach to erosion control is to simplify the decision process and enhance the effectiveness of solutions to erosion issues.

LESEMP does not contain any regulatory oversight provisions. Property owner input is integral throughout the development of the LESEMP recommendations which are based on feedback and information obtained from a variety of sources, most notably those who live and work along the coast.

Recommendations for the LESEMP along with maps showing the extent of each LESEMP study region and more information about the program are available on the Office of Coastal Management’s web site at www.ohiodnr.com/tabid/20501/default.aspx.

The ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
