Nine Ohio educators were recently recognized for their outstanding contributions to environmental education by the ODNR, Division of Forestry.
COLUMBUS, OH — Nine Ohio educators were recently recognized for their outstanding contributions to environmental education by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Forestry.
Representing government, colleges and universities, public education, and private industry, the recipients were lauded at the annual Paul Bunyan Show in Guernsey County for their involvement with the award-winning Project Learning Tree (PLT) program.
“We appreciate the commitment of these educators to keep their students and the public well informed of our natural world,” said Robert Boyles, chief, ODNR Division of Forestry. “Project Learning Tree lessons help teachers and environmental educators frame outdoor education in the context of our vital tree and forest resources. The Division of Forestry is proud to be the state sponsor of PLT-Ohio.”
Over the past thirty-one years, over 20,000 Ohio educators, natural resource professionals, and other leaders of learners have attended one-day PLT sessions or multiple-day facilitator leadership workshops. PLT activity lessons are correlated to state teaching standards for science and social studies. For workshop, as well as PLT program information and state correlations, visit http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/tabid/5119/Default.aspx.
“PLT is a powerful tool for any educator,” said Ken Bowald, associate dean at Hocking College, School of Natural Resources, recognized as the PLT Ohio’s 2011 Outstanding Educator. “In addition to classroom teachers, it has been a boon to naturalists and environmental educators, providing activities to engage, educate, and inspire people in and about our forests and ecosystems".
PLT is used by 15 Ohio colleges and universities as part of their teaching methods classes or in special workshop courses. An on-line graduate-level leadership workshop for facilitators is offered through the Miami University iDiscovery program.
The ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
