A conference to provide conservation professionals the tools to reduce the impacts of climate change on Ohio’s wildlife is slated for December 15th, according to the ODNR, Division of Wildlife.
COLUMBUS, OH – A conference to provide conservation professionals the tools to reduce the impacts of climate change on Ohio’s wildlife is slated for December 15th, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. The one-day conference will be held at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center on The Ohio State University campus.
The conference is being organized by the Division of Wildlife in partnership with the Ohio Chapter of The Wildlife Society, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, the Wilds, The Ohio State University, and several other organizations; it is intended for wildlife managers, fish and wildlife biologists, naturalists, and other conservation professionals.
This conference will provide an overview of climate science and trends, projected impacts on wildlife and habitats, and tools and strategies for adaptation. The goal is to help the division and its partners develop climate adaptation plans and management strategies, including addressing climate impacts in the next edition of Ohio’s State Wildlife Action Plan.
The keynote address will be given by Dr. David Karowe, professor of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University. Dr. Karowe will discuss how plants and animals have already responded to climate change, climate projections for the rest of the 21st Century, predicted consequences for plants and animals, and options for mitigation and adaptation.
Other speakers include state climatologist Dr. Jeffrey Rogers who will discuss climate trends in the Buckeye State, and Dr. Olivia LeDee of the University of Wisconsin who will cover potential impacts on Ohio’s wildlife. Karl Martin of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Jeff Walk with the Illinois Chapter of The Nature Conservancy will share how conservation organizations in Illinois and Wisconsin are responding to a changing climate. A panel focused on communication, risk assessment, and decision-making will be comprised of The Ohio State University School of Environment and Natural Resources faculty Jeremy Bruskotter, Robyn Wilson, and Eric Toman.
The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $40 per person and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, and refreshments.
