SANDUSKY, OH - The Ohio Lake Erie Commission (OLEC) will hold its quarterly meeting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21, at the Vern Riffe Center, 77 South High Street, Room 1960, Columbus.

During the OLEC meeting, there will be a review of the status and recent progress on commission activities, including a review of the Lake Erie Protection Fund grants and Balanced Growth activities. Commission members are expected to act on two watershed Balanced Growth Plans, one for the Eastern Lake County Coastal Tributaries watershed and one for the Furnace Run watershed. Communities located in the watershed area, who have passed resolutions of support for the plans, may be eligible for state incentives.

All meetings of the Ohio Lake Erie Commission are open to the public and include a public comment period. Organizations and citizens are encouraged to attend this meeting and provide input on issues of concern.

The OLEC was established for the purpose of preserving Lake Erie's natural resources, protecting the quality of its waters and ecosystem and promoting economic development in the region. The director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources serves as the commission's chairman. Additional members include the directors of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Ohio Department of Development, Ohio Environment Protection Agency, the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The commission also oversees the Ohio Lake Erie Protection Fund, which is the source of grant money for projects that benefit the Lake Erie watershed economically and environmentally. This fund is supported by Ohioans who purchase a Lake Erie license plate displaying the Marblehead Lighthouse or Toledo Harbor Lighthouse designed by Ohio artist Ben Richmond.
