Farmers working in the Grand Lake St. Marys watershed are encouraged to attend meetings about rules impacting livestock producers and operators who handle manure within the watershed.

Farmers requested to attend

MARIA STEIN, OH - Farmers working in the Grand Lake St. Marys distressed watershed are strongly encouraged to attend meetings to learn more about rules impacting livestock producers and those operators who handle manure within the watershed. The meetings will be held on March 26, and they are hosted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Soil and Water Resources Division, along with the Mercer and Auglaize Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD).

The meetings will be held at the Maria Stein Legion Hall, located at 8140 State Route 119, Maria Stein, with two available time slots to accommodate producers’ schedules. The first session will be from 9-11 a.m., and the second session will be from 8-10 p.m. The information provided at these meetings will focus on what actions farmers and landowners located in the Grand Lake St. Marys watershed need to implement and what records they should keep to remain in compliance with the Distressed Watershed Rules.

Staff will be available to answer specific Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan (CNMP) questions one-on-one between 11 a.m. and noon and between 7-8 p.m. Farmers are invited to bring their CNMP with them to the meeting. All producers, regardless of location, are invited to attend to learn about the new rules, which encompass more than restricting winter manure application.

Producers or landowners who utilize manure for crop production in the Grand Lake St. Marys watershed are strongly encouraged to attend one of these scheduled meetings. ODNR believes it is vital for farmers to become familiar with the specific details.

Preregistration is not required, and light refreshments will be available at the meetings.  If people have any questions, contact the Auglaize SWCD at 419-738-4016 or Mercer SWCD at 419-586-3289.
