KENT, OH – Nature enthusiasts are invited to explore one of Ohio’s most unusual landscapes on a guided hike through Kent Bog State Nature Preserve on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m.

This free, family friendly event will last approximately one hour. Hikers will follow a mile long, wheelchair accessible trail through the bog.

Kent Bog originated during the Ice Age, when the retreating glacier created a climate more suited to northern species, and a chunk of slowly melting glacial ice formed a kettle lake. Eventually this lake filled in, and today the bog is home to one of the largest populations of tamarack trees south of Canada. Unlike most other evergreens, tamaracks are deciduous conifers which shed all of their needles annually and produce fresh new growth in the spring.

The unique, acidic bog environment is also home to other specialized plants including leather leaf, bog holly, high-bush blueberry, cranberry and sphagnum moss.

Kent Bog State Nature Preserve is located on Meloy Road approximately 1/8 of a mile west of State Route 43 in Kent. Parking is limited, and hikers are encouraged to carpool.
