COLUMBUS, OH – To remove scrap tires across the state, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention has awarded $1.1 million to fund 28 different projects to assist in the clean-up of more than 2.3 million scrap tires around Ohio.

The different types of projects include manufacturing and processing, civil engineering and tire amnesty. Applicants were required to be an agency of the state, such as a municipality, state college or university, park district, township, county or solid waste management district. Businesses or nonprofit organizations looking for funding must secure a sponsor to serve as the grant applicant.

“By offering financial assistance to implement programs and opportunities for people to reduce scrap tires in Ohio, we offer a more environmentally-friendly area for Ohio residents, visitors and wildlife,” said ODNR Director James Zehringer.

Recycled tires can be made into tire chips for rubber surfacing on outdoor tracks, as tire chips for playgrounds and mulch or shredded for use as a substitute for gravel in landfill drainage systems. Recycled tires can be made into many new, useful products to benefit Ohioans.

According to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, approximately 70 percent of Ohio’s scrap tires are recycled.

The ODNR Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention is responsible for implementing statewide waste reduction, recycling, recycling market development and litter prevention programs. All Ohioans are encouraged to reduce waste, recycle materials and buy recycled-content products. For more information, visit www.ohiodnr.com/recycling.

ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Information about ODNR programs and recreational facilities is available online at www.ohiodnr.com.
