Ohio will host the annual Post 6 regional mine safety competition at the Jerry L. Stewart Ohio Mine Safety Training Center in Harrison County.
35 teams from seven states to participate in three-day event, June 5-7
CADIZ, OH — For the third year, Ohio will host the annual Post 6 regional mine safety competition at the Jerry L. Stewart Ohio Mine Safety Training Center in Harrison County, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Mineral Resources Management.
WHAT: 31st annual Ohio Valley Mine Rescue Contest
WHO: Thirty-five teams representing mining operators in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West
Virginia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland and Virginia.
Competition judges include officials from U.S. Department of Labor, West Virginia
Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training, Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Protection and ODNR.
WHEN: Tuesday, June 5 – Bench and First Aid Competitions – 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Wednesday, June 6 – Mine Rescue Competition – 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Thursday, June 7 – Pre-shift Inspection Competition – 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

WHY: Regional mine safety competitions help develop and test the skills of mine rescue
teams by using simulated mine emergency conditions, such as those found at the
simulated mine areas at ODNR’s Jerry L. Stewart Ohio Mine Safety Training Center.
Teams are tested in a variety of activities including mine rescue, breathing apparatus
troubleshooting and pre-shift contests, which test mining officials in identifying
hazards before mining begins. The event is coordinated by the National Mine
Rescue Association’s Post 6 region.
