Students to compete at the Canon Envirothon
COLUMBUS, OH – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) recognizes the Chardon High School Envirothon team for earning first place at the Ohio Envirothon contest. The five-member team from Chardon competed at the two day competition June 11-12 at Deer Creek State Park to advance to the Canon Envirothon, which is a North American competition for students in high school.
“The Envirothon is a great hands-on learning experience for high schools students, educating youth on the importance of protecting the future of our natural resources,” said Jeanne Russell, environmental education coordinator, ODNR’s Division of Soil and Water Resources. “The Envirothon is also a great networking opportunity for students to meet other students from across the United States and Canada and introduces them to potential careers opportunities in the field of natural resources management.”
Sponsors of this year’s Ohio Envirothon competition included the ODNR’s Division of Soil and Water Resources and the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Additional major sponsors for the 2012 Ohio Envirothon included ODNR’s Divisions of Forestry and Wildlife, the Ohio EPA’s Environmental Education Fund, Pheasants Forever, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Ag Credit and The Ohio State University School of Environment and Natural Resources.
This year's competitors included Fort Jennings High School, Delta FFA and Wynford High School from northwest Ohio; Boardman High School, Chardon High School, Crestview High School and United High School from northeast Ohio; Buckeye Career Center, Granville High School, Mid-East Career Center and East Knox High School from east-central Ohio; Franklin High School, Centerville High School and Beavercreek High School from southwest Ohio; and West Union High School, Delaware Career Center and New Albany High School from central/southeast Ohio.
Chardon will have the opportunity to compete at Canon Envirothon the last week of July. Fifty-five teams representing 45 U.S. states, nine Canadian provinces and one Canadian territory will compete for the top prize. The five-member teams will compete in five areas of environmental studies: soil/land use, aquatics ecology, forestry, wildlife and this year’s environmental issue: non-point-source pollution-low impact development.
Test questions include written and required hands-on observations, measurements and calculations. Teams will also compose and present a 20-minute oral presentation on a given scenario question pertaining to non-point source pollution-low impact development and answer questions in front of a panel of judges.
The top 15 teams will be awarded a share of more than $125,000 in scholarships and Canon products. The contest will be held at the Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa., July 22-28. This year marks the 25th anniversary for the Envirothon competition. To learn more, visit www.envirothon.org or www.ohiodnr.com/soilandwater.
