AKRON, OH – Approximately 100 students ages 7-14 from the Akron area participated in the free fifth annual youth fishing day as a result of a partnership between State Rep. Vernon Sykes (Dist. 44) and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The event took place at the Wildlife District Three Youth Fishing Area on Portage Lakes Drive.

“I believe it is important for Akron youth to learn about fishing, which is why I wanted to again co-host this day with ODNR,” said Sykes. “The opportunity for more than 100 students to gain an increased awareness of wildlife will benefit them for the rest of their lives.”

The participants visited various stations consisting of educational opportunities focusing on the basics of fishing and learning about Ohio’s natural resources and wildlife. Stations included filleting and cooking, local information/map reading, knot tying, rigging, habitat and handling. This event is based on the federal program Passport to Fishing and Boating.

After the stations, the youth fished at the Akron youth ponds and enjoyed a lunch provided by Sykes’ office. Following lunch, the Division of Wildlife provided a demonstration on electroshocking, a common tool used by biologists to study fish populations.

During closing ceremonies, each participant received a rod and reel combination to take home.
