The ODNR Division of Mineral Resources Management held its sixth annual Ohio Mine Safety Competition at the Jerry L. Stewart Mine Safety Training Center in Cadiz on June 20.
CADIZ, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Mineral Resources Management (MRM) held its sixth annual Ohio Mine Safety Competition at the state-of-the-art Jerry L. Stewart Mine Safety Training Center in Cadiz on June 20. Eleven Ohio teams and two Pennsylvania teams competed this year.

This year’s competition featured two major events: mine rescue and bench (breathing apparatus). The Red Team from Century Mine, located in Ohio and owned and operated by American Energy Corporation, took first place in both events.

“We are very proud of our mine rescue teams here in Ohio,” said MRM Chief Lanny Erdos. “This year’s mine rescue activity blended a real-life rescue scenario with a zero-visibility smoke chamber. American Energy’s Red Team took top honors for how they handled these challenging conditions.”

Rounding out the top five winners of the mine rescue activity were teams from Hopedale Mining, Ohio Valley Coal Powhatan No. 6, Buckingham Coal No. 6 and American Energy’s Blue Team.

Mirroring the mine rescue results, the team captain from the Red Team took first place in the bench competition, which tests a team member’s skills in troubleshooting the breathing apparatus critical to each team’s safety. Hopedale Mining finished second and American Energy’s Blue Team finished third.

“Ohio’s Mine Safety Training Center was designed to provide mine rescuers and mine workers with a facility where they can conduct training exercises that will help keep them safe on the job,” said Erdos. “Such training enhances mine safety, reinforces accident prevention programs and, in turn, strengthens Ohio’s mining industry.”

The Mine Safety Training Center has two 158’ by 200’ simulated mines that provide a venue for vital hands-on training. There are also four classrooms on-site, which allow MRM staff to conduct informative training sessions regarding the Ohio mining industry and mine safety.

The Ohio Mine Safety Competition will count toward one of the two federally required mine safety and rescue programs that miners must annually complete.
