Landowners with more than one acre of woods in northwest Portage County are invited to take a short survey toward the development of an area forestry strategy.

Area plan being developed with woodland owner input

COLUMBUS, OH – Landowners with more than one acre of woods in northwest Portage County are invited to take a short survey toward the development of an area forestry strategy, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Forestry. The public is also invited to review the draft plan and provide comments.

“Landowners can benefit in many ways from this targeted effort, and their participation is important to the process,” said Robert Boyles, state forester and chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. “We want to provide landowners with options to increase their benefits from woodlands while providing an area-wide framework for addressing forest loss, fragmentation and other threats to forest health.”

The broad-scale forest management plan will be designed to benefit landowners in several communities and townships in northwest Portage County, including Freedom, Hiram, Mantua and Shalersville townships and the communities of Aurora and Streetsboro.

Comments and the survey will be accepted through Oct. 31. The draft plan and survey are available online at http://ohiodnr.com/Default.aspx?tabid=24131 or by contacting Jason Van Houten at jason.vanhouten@dnr.state.oh.us or 614-265-6703.

ODNR’s Division of Forestry works to promote the wise use and sustainable management of Ohio’s public and private woodlands. To learn more about Ohio’s woodlands, forest health and tree care, visit www.ohiodnr.com/forestry.
