The ODNR Division of Forestry is accepting applications for local governments and nonprofits that own locally protected woodlands to receive up to $7,000 in federal grant funds.
COLUMBUS, OH –The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Forestry is accepting applications for local governments and nonprofits that own locally protected woodlands to receive up to $7,000 in federal grant funds. These funds will be used to develop woodland demonstration sites in northwest Portage County.
“The woodland demonstration sites will provide landowners with examples of work projects they can do to increase the health and value of their woods,” said Robert Boyles, state forester and chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. “These sites will support the Northwest Portage County Forest Plan, which is a collaborative effort led by the ODNR Division of Forestry and local natural resource partners.”
The focus of the plan is to provide assistance to private landowners with small acreage properties (two to 10 acres) who are interested in increasing their woodland benefits. Recommended activities include tree plantings, invasive plant control, wildlife habitat improvement and other woodland improvement practices.
Grant recipients must provide equal matching funds. Sites must be owned by a local government or a nonprofit agency, be publicly accessible and be located in Portage County within the townships of Freedom, Hiram, Mantua or Shalersville or within the cities of Streetsboro or Aurora. State and federal lands are not eligible.
Applications will be accepted through Nov. 20. Applications are available online at bit.ly/QOtqKq or by contacting Cotton Randall at cotton.randall@dnr.state.oh.us or calling 614-265-6667.
