Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve in Jackson County will be closed to the public Nov. 26-27 and Dec. 1-2 due to special controlled deer hunts.
JACKSON, OH — Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve in Jackson County will be closed to the public Nov. 26-27 and Dec. 1-2 due to special controlled deer hunts, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.
Special permits for the controlled hunts were awarded to a limited number of hunters through a lottery drawing held earlier this fall. Ohio hunting regulations, including bag limits, tagging and license requirements, apply to the special hunts. There are no more permits available.
The special controlled deer hunts are a management tool to protect sensitive habitats negatively impacted by over-browsing deer. Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve spans 2,000 acres of high-quality Appalachian forest and is home to several endangered species and significant wildflower populations.
Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve is located off State Route 35, approximately four miles northwest of Jackson, at 1703 Lake Katharine Road, Jackson, Ohio 45640. Questions regarding the special hunts can be directed to ODNR’s Division of Natural Areas and Preserves by calling 740-380-8919.
ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at ohiodnr.com.
