COLUMBUS, OH - Jeanne Russell of New Albany was recently honored with the Project Learning Tree (PLT) John Hug Legacy Award for recognition of outstanding leadership in environmental education. She is the non-point source education coordinator for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Soil and Water Resources.

The John Hug Legacy Award goes to an individual who is a strong educator with outstanding contributions to environmental education in Ohio. Russell’s role includes providing professional development opportunities for Soil and Water Conservation District educators, helping coordinate the Ohio Envirothon program for high school students, conducting workshops and sessions at statewide conferences related to natural resource protection and representing ODNR on the Ohio Environmental Education Fund advisory council.

“One of the best parts of my job is getting to meet and work with so many people who are truly dedicated to protecting natural resources and educating others about the environment and our impact on everything around us,” said Russell. “I feel like I learn something new every day – and that’s a good feeling.”

The award is named after the first recipient in 1995, Dr. John Hug of Grove City. Hug worked as a curriculum specialist with the Ohio Department of Education and was the first Ohio PLT state coordinator.

Russell is a 20-year employee of ODNR. Her environmental education contributions to Ohio youth include a variety of activities. Russell has worked with the Environmental Education Council of Ohio (EECO) and served as a board member for many years. Additionally, she has helped with annual conferences and led an Ohio delegation to the Midwest Leadership Clinic in Chicago. As a primary advocate of the PLT environmental education program, Russell routinely encourages county Soil and Water Conservation District education specialists to be PLT-trained and use the PLT materials locally. She also ensures that PLT materials are accessible to educators and youth statewide.

The Project Learning Tree John Hug Legacy Award is given periodically to deserving individuals. Russell was recognized at a recent awards recognition held at the Procter Center near London, which was hosted by PLT Ohio board members.

PLT is sponsored in Ohio by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Forestry.
