COLUMBUS, OH – More than 12,000 Ohio schoolchildren and special needs youth will be introduced to boating safety and boating skills programs this year thanks to grant funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft.
The division recently awarded 33 grant recipients a total of $364,417 to help fund boating safety education programs during 2008. The grant awards range from $1,623 to $27,177.
“Our commitment to boating education as a way of improving waterway safety is shared by many community groups,” said Pamela S. Dillon, chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft. “We continue to support these efforts by awarding boating safety education grants annually.”
The Division of Watercraft, U.S. Power Squadrons, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and other boating partners statewide offer more than 400 boating safety education programs each year, reaching more than 12,000 youths.
State law requires any person born on or after January 1, 1982 to be able to show proof they have successfully completed a boater safety education course that is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators if they operate a boat powered by a motor greater than 10 horsepower or provide supervision to an underage watercraft operator.
Money for the Boating Safety Education Grant Program is provided through the Ohio Waterways Safety Fund, which is comprised of a share of the state motor fuels tax, watercraft registration and titling fees and funding from the U.S. Coast Guard.
