The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is accepting applications for local governments and nonprofits that own locally protected woodlands to receive up to $7,000 in federal grant funds. These funds will be used to develop woodland demonstration sites in the Hocking Hills area.

“The woodland demonstration sites will provide landowners with examples of projects they can do to increase the health and value of their woods,” said Robert Boyles, state forester and chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. “These sites will support the Hocking Hills Woodland Plan, which is a collaborative effort led by the ODNR Division of Forestry and local natural resource partners.”

The focus of the plan is to provide assistance to private landowners with small-parcel properties (from 2-10 acres) and area cabin owners who are interested in increasing their woodland benefits. The plan recommends activities that improve woodland health and enhance wildlife habitats.

Grant recipients must provide equal matching funds. Sites must be owned by a local government or a nonprofit organization and be publicly accessible. The sites must also be located in Berne Township or the community of Sugar Grove in Fairfield County or in the townships of Benton, Falls, Falls-Gore, Good Hope, Green and Laurel or the community of Logan in Hocking County. State and federal lands are not eligible.

Applications will be accepted through March 4. Applications are available online at http://ohiodnr.com/Default.aspx?tabid=24187 or by contacting Cotton Randall at cotton.randall@dnr.state.oh.us or calling 614-265-6667.
