09-08-08 information about natural resources issues, such as ground water availability and location of oil and gas resources
MAP OF CORE LOCATIONS IN OHIO AND ADJACENT STATES NOW AVAILABLE
COLUMBUS, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological Survey has released the Core Locations in Ohio and Adjacent States wall-size map for citizens, industry personnel, and researchers who use information from rock cores drilled throughout the state. Cores are cylinders of rock usually 2 inches in diameter and are sources of valuable data about the depth, thickness, and type of bedrock found in a specific area. These data can yield information about natural resources issues, such as ground water availability and location of oil and gas resources.
The updated map shows the location where each of the 845 cores stored at the Ohio Geological Survey's H.R. Collins Repository was drilled (21 of the cores were drilled in Kentucky and West Virginia). Each core location contains a color-coded symbol for the Geologic System or Period present at the total depth of that core, an Ohio Geological Survey core identification number, and the stratigraphic range of that core. A table of Ohio's stratigraphic nomenclature used on the map is included on the map, as well as a summary of the core collection by stratigraphic sequence. The cores were drilled by private citizens, company representatives, governmental officials, and researchers, who then donated the core samples (and often core descriptions) to the H.R. Collins Repository located at Alum Creek State Park north of Columbus.
The paper wall map, Core Locations in Ohio Adjacent States (Map MG-4), can be purchased for $10 plus sales tax (and shipping, if applicable) from the main office of the Ohio Geological Survey by calling (614) 265-6576 or emailing geo.survey@dnr.state.oh.us. There are also 2,700 descriptions of core not stored at the H.R. Collins Repository available for public review at the main office, which is located at 2045 Morse Road, Columbus, Ohio 43229.
The cores and their available records can be accessed at the H.R. Collins Repository by first visiting the Ohio Geological Survey website and reviewing the Core-Use Policy and/or the Oil and Gas Well Cutting-Use Policy and completing the Permission Form for use of the laboratory and core/sample repository. Please direct questions about visiting the repository to Gregory Schumacher at (740) 548-7348, ext. 25.
