Best Management Practices Workshop for Contractors and Others
Working Along the Lake Erie Shore
GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE, OH - The best management practices for controlling the natural processes of erosion, sedimentation and recession along Lake Erie's coast and tributaries is the topic of a two-day workshop that includes site visits along Ohio's shore.
In partnership with the Ohio Coastal Training Program, Pennsylvania Sea Grant will facilitate the April 20-21 workshop targeted toward landscapers, realtors, environmental engineers, surveyors, municipal officials and other professionals in Ohio and Pennsylvania who work along the environmentally sensitive Lake Erie coast.
"Waterfront property is very valuable. People want to protect their investment by hiring professionals who understand its special concerns," said Marti Martz, Sea Grant coastal outreach specialist. "People working along Lake Erie or a tributary stream can have considerable impact on that area. Improper design, siting or construction of a project can result in increased bluff and stream bank erosion and sediment deposition. This compromises the integrity of the shore and adversely affects quality of the surrounding water."
Topics to be covered in the workshop being held at the at the Lodge and Conference Center at Geneva State Park in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio, include coastal geology, hydrology and the ecological impact of shore erosion; public access issues; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' permit process; similarities and differences between the permitting processes in Ohio and Pennsylvania; landscape solutions for erosion-prone areas; habitat impacts of riparian projects and in-stream habitat and bank stabilization devices.
Staff from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Office of Coastal Management, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Ohio Sea Grant College Program will discuss coastal design standards and recommendations, permitting processes and best management practices along Ohio's portion of the Lake Erie shore and its tributary streams.
The cost to attend the two-day workshop is $45. Continuing education credit is available through Pennsylvania State University for an additional fee of $35. For more information or to register for the workshop, contact Martz at (814) 217-9015 or mam60@psu.edu.
The Ohio Coastal Training Program is a NOAA funded partnership that provides science-based training for professionals whose decisions impact Lake Erie.
