02/26/09 Communities within the Ohio's Lake Erie Watershed are encouraged to apply for scholarships
Scholarships Available for Lake Erie Watershed Community Officials to Attend the Ohio Stormwater Conference
HURON, OH - Local officials whose communities are within Ohio's Lake Erie Watershed are encouraged to apply for scholarships to attend the 2009 Ohio Stormwater Conference. The conference will address stormwater, flooding and water quality concerns across Ohio.
The $75 scholarships are being offered by the Ohio Coastal Training Program (CTP), which provides science-based training for professionals whose decisions impact Lake Erie. The Ohio CTP is a collaborating partner for the May 13-15 conference, which is being hosted by the Mill Creek Watershed Council of Communities, the Regional Stormwater Collaborative, the Ohio Water Environment Association and the Tinkers Creek Watershed Partners.
"Many communities are experiencing increases in flooding because of continuing development," said Harry Stark, chairman of the conference organization committee and deputy director of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. "New roads, parking lots and rooftops are preventing rain and snow from being absorbed into the ground, resulting in polluted streams and flooded homes and businesses."
Topics to be covered at the conference include best management practices for design and performance, updates on environmental issues and regulatory information, new technology and pollution prevention measures. The conference is targeted toward professionals who regularly deal with stormwater issues, including engineers, consultants, watershed organizations, government agencies, local officials and academic staff. The public is also invited to attend.
The conference will be held at the Manor House Banquet and Conference Center in Mason, Ohio, about 20 miles north of Cincinnati. To apply for a scholarship or register for the conference, contact Harry Stark at (216) 201-2001 ext. 1205 or hstark@ccbh.net.
The Ohio CTP is a NOAA-funded partnership of the Ohio Department of Natural Resource's Division of Wildlife and Office of Coastal Management, the Ohio Sea Grant College Program and the Ohio Lake Erie Commission.
