The Ohio Lake Erie Commission will offer two opportunities - one in February and one in March - for local officials, planners, architects, engineers, surveyors, real estate agents, attorneys and others to learn about a series of voluntary best practices for managing local land use to support both economic development and protection of the Lake Erie watershed.

Sean D. Logan, director of ODNR, was recently elected chairman of the Ohio Lake Erie Commission for 2008. James Beasley, director of the Ohio Department of Transportation, was elected secretary. The commission oversees the Ohio Lake Erie Protection Fund (LEPF), which is the source of grant money.

New permitting conditions designed to prevent the leakage of natural gas from oil and gas wells into freshwater aquifers are now in effect for a broad northeast Ohio area. The permitting conditions will affect oil and natural gas drilling operations in all of Cuyahoga, Lake, Ashtabula and Geauga counties, as well as northern Summit and eastern Lorain and Medina counties. The rules apply to both urban and non-urban drilling permits.

|
An array of dark-colored wildlife species and creatures that operate primarily at night will be center stage for the 2008 Ohio Wildlife Diversity Conference, scheduled for Wednesday, March 12 at the Aladdin Shrine Center in Columbus. The conference, "Back in Black," is sponsored by the ODNR Division of Wildlife. It is open to the public.
