Rising oil and natural gas prices have spurred an increase in oil and gas-drilling activity in Ohio in recent years, especially wells targeting Ohio (Devonian) shale, an important oil and gas-producing reservoir. Ohio’s mineral industries produced more than $2.6 billion for the state’s economy in 2006, according to a report issued by the ODNR Division of Geological Survey. The number represents a slight (.1 percent) decrease from 2005.

More than 30 earthquakes have occurred in and around Ohio since 2002, spurring the ODNR Division of Geological Survey to publish an updated map that pinpoints the location and approximate magnitude of these recent seismic incidents.
