PLAN FOR MAINTAINING LAKE SNOWDEN AS A PUBLIC RECREATIONAL RESOURCE NOW UNDER REVIEW
Sponsors working to reopen the lake’s public campground by April 1, 2008

COLUMBUS, OH – Representatives of local and state stakeholders with an interest in the future of Lake Snowden in Athens County are currently reviewing a plan drafted by Hocking College to maintain the facility as a public recreational resource for camping, as well as fishing, hiking and picnicking. Hocking College is current owner of the property.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), the Athens County Soil & Water Conservation District, the Athens County Commissioners, the Village of Albany and Hocking College are sponsors of the Margaret Creek Watershed Work Plan. The group, which has met several times over the last six months, is working toward an agreement that will maintain Lake Snowden’s facilities (including the trails, dam and campground) as safe and viable for public use.

“Everyone involved is actively seeking a solution that will keep this recreational asset open to the public,” said Tony Celebrezze, ODNR deputy director for recreation and resource. “We are making good progress toward that goal.”

The group has set April 1, 2008 as the target date for reopening the lake’s campground, which Hocking College closed this year, citing safety concerns. The campground will remain closed until then to deter vandalism.

The public is invited to review the draft plan and provide input at an open house scheduled for Wednesday, January 9, 2008 in the Sauber Environmental Center located at Lake Snowden.
