TAFT TO VISIT HOCKING HILLS FOR ANNUAL WINTER HIKE
Hocking Hills State Park to Host Family Event January 17

COLUMBUS, OH -- Amid the scenic sandstone cliffs and deep gorges of Hocking Hills State Park, Governor Bob Taft, ODNR Director Sam Speck, and other outdoor enthusiasts will hit the trail on Saturday, January 17, for the park's 39th Annual Winter Hike.

"This hike showcases the spectacular scenery of the Hocking Hills region, and is an excellent opportunity for Ohioans to enjoy our state's outdoors, shake off the winter blues and get out to exercise," said Taft, who participated in the hike with his wife, Hope, two years ago.

Often highlighted by frozen waterfalls and rock formations blanketed in snow, the annual hike draws thousands of Ohioans for the six-mile trek from Old Man's Cave to Ash Cave.

"Many friends and families have made the Winter Hike a seasonal tradition," said Taft. "Winter simply enhances the natural beauty of the area, which offers one of the most unique landscapes in the state."

Hikers should gather at the Old Man's Cave parking lot prior to 9 a.m. Groups of hikers will start down the trail to Ash Cave at regular intervals until 11 a.m. The hike is expected to take about five hours.

A hearty lunch of bean soup, cornbread and hot chocolate will be served at Cedar Falls, mid-way point of the hike. Park officials will provide return transportation from Ash Cave to Old Man's Cave following the event.

For an added treat this year, visitors may join the park staff at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 16, for a twilight stroll along the paved quarter-mile path back to Ash Cave. Participants are then invited to warm up by the fire at the Hocking Hills dining lodge and participate in other activities, including games and refreshments.

Hikers should come dressed in layered clothing and sturdy footwear. The hike will take place regardless of inclement weather.

The event is free to the public. Donations are encouraged for refreshments. Winter hike souvenir patches and hiking stick medallions will be available for purchase.

Hocking Hills State Park is located on State Route 664 in Hocking County, about 12 miles southwest of Logan. For further information about the Annual Winter Hike, call the park office at 740-385-6841.
