To access these searches, click the plus sign next to Downloads and then click the type of search you wish to perform. Note: Results are limited to 1,000 records per search.

  • Active Well Owners search creates a table with registered well owners/companies in Ohio.
  • County Engineers List creates a table of applications received.
  • Permit and Plug List creates a table of issued permits.

Active Well Owners
There are three search criteria to limit results: Operator Name, City and Zip Code (5 digit).

  • Operator Name will yield the most precise results when the name is entered in the same format it appears on a permit. If this does not yield a result, try either a keyword from the company name or enter the last name first, if it is a person's name. (Operator name is the same as company name or active well owner.)
  • City and Zip Code (5 digit) refer to the mailing address of the active well owner and not to where they are active in drilling or plugging.

County Engineers List
There are five search criteria to limit results: Date Application Received, County, Operator Name, Application Type, and Township.

  • Date Application Received.
  • County and Township refer to the proposed well location.
  • Operator Name is the owner/company that applied for the permit.
  • Application Type refers to the action to be performed such as Drill a New Well, Plug Back, or Plug and Abandon.

Permit and Plug List
This list refers to issued permits. There are eight search criteria to limit results: Application Issued Date, County, Township, Operator Name, Application Type, Section Number, Lot, and Permit or Plug.

  • Application Issued Date is the date the permit was issued.
  • County, Township, Section Number, and Lot refer to the well location.
  • Operator Name is the owner/company that applied for the permit.
  • Application Type is the type of permit being requested.
  • Permit or Plug is the option to search for only permits to drill (Permit) or permits to plug (Plug).

This information can also be useful for getting large lists of wells for whole counties or townships. To access this search, click the plus sign next to Emergency Response and then click Well Information.

There are three search criteria to limit results:  County, Operator Name and Township. Search results can be exported to Microsoft Excel to be sorted. Results are limited to 1,000 records per search.

Reports
Searches in the Reports folder will produce reports for each well included in the query.

  • Completions search is the most comprehensive including location, operator, formation, casing and annual production information (where the data is available). This is the best search to get individual well information. There is a limit of 20 completion reports per search.
  • Corrections search will create a report of corrections to permits within a designated time period.
  • County Engineers search will create a report of applications received with select information provided for each application.
  • Permit and Plug List search will create a report of all the permits issued within a specified time frame.

Both County Engineers and Permit and Plug List searches can be customized by various search criteria like location and owner/company name to get particular reports. To access these searches, click the plus sign next to Reports and then click the type of search you wish to perform.

Corrections
The Corrections Search is currently not working.

County Engineers List
The County Engineers List search creates small reports of the applications received. There are five search criteria to limit the search results: Date Application Received, County, Operator Name, Application Type and Township.

  • Date Application Received.
  • County and Township refer to the proposed well location.
  • Operator Name is the owner/company that applied for the permit..
  • Application Type refers to the action to be performed such as Drill New Well, Plug Back, or Plug and Abandon.

Permit and Plug List
The Permit and Plug List search creates small reports of permits issued. There are eight search criteria to limit the search results: Application Issued Date, County, Township, Operator Name, Application Type, Section Number, Lot, and Permit or Plug.

  • Application Issued Date.
  • County, Township, Section Number and Lot refer to the well location.
  • Operator Name is the owner/company that applied for the permit.
  • Application Type is the action being performed.
  • Permit or Plug is the option to search for only permits to drill or permits to plug.

Permit and Plug List can be limited to a particular time period using the Application Issued Date. For example, to limit the list to the last week, click the middle box (across from the Application Issued Date) to select Greater Than or Equal, then click the right-most box to enter the date for a week ago. The report will include all permits issued from that date until the current date.

PROBLEMS & QUICK SOLUTIONS (to get correct information)

The Oil and Gas Well Database was implemented in January 2008 and since that time we continue to discover and fix problems. These are addressed below along with solutions to get the correct results.

  1. Blank table or report. This may result
    - when there are no records to match what was entered,
    - if too many search criteria are used,
    - when incorrect search criteria is entered,
    - when the database is being heavily used, or
    - if a Producing Formation is selected.
First, click the #2 Search bar, check what was entered, and click Report again. If this does not work, reduce the number of search criteria used and search again. If it still does not work, consult the Other Problems section of this page below.
  2. Cannot view well images. When clicking the Link to Image(s) at the bottom of the Ohio Well Completions Report, a box will query whether to save or open the images. After clicking Open, the images should appear. The link containing the word Geosurvey is a PDF file of the well card. The other images are TIFF files that contain multiple images. They can be viewed with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer or Microsoft Office Document Imaging.
You may need to change your viewer if you cannot successfully view multiple images per file. Some viewers, like QuickTime, will only view the first image. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer works well. Follow the following setup procedure: start with Explore; then Tools/Folder Options/File Types; next look for the .TIF extension; next click Change or Select New; finally select Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. If unsuccessful, contact Gregg Miller for assistance at 614-265-6915.
  3. Cannot view entire Ohio Well Completions Report. Depending on your internet browser, you may need to scroll down to view formation and production information and links to well images. Note: There are two scroll bars.
  4. Open browser with map of well location might not work. When clicking the link "open browser with map of well location" near bottom of Ohio Well Completions Report, a new window opens in Google Maps. When working correctly, the well location map should appear. If Google cannot plot well location, add a closing parenthesis within the Google search field and click Search Maps.

OTHER PROBLEMS
These problems occur in the database, but there are no solutions currently to get speedy or correct results if trying to use the following:

  1. Producing Formation search field is not working properly. Any search that includes the use of the Producing Formation field will usually result in a blank report or incomplete results.
  2. Corrections search is currently not working.
  3. Slow search. Every search creates a new report each time a search is performed. When the database is being heavily used, generally during the afternoon, additional processing time is required.

Database comments and questions can be directed to Kelly Barrett, (614) 265-6502.
