The division developed a Geographical Information System (GIS) for abandoned coal mine permits to assist in evaluating risks from abandoned mines and to determine eligibility for abandoned mine land (AML) project funding. Abandoned mine location information is useful in many land-related analyses.
Archived permit maps were digitized and organized by county location. Permit boundary, affected boundary, test hole locations, and associated attributes were entered into the system. The scanned image for each source document is available upon request. The scanned mine maps may depict additional information and very dAdditional detailed information can be accessed at the State Archives at the Ohio Historical Society and/or the DMRM.
The MineInfo Project GIS data should not be used to substitute for a detailed site investigation. Users should keep in mind that the data provides only an approximation of the permit and affected boundaries due to historical lack of mapping and missing archival records.
DMRM will continue to update the datasets as historic maps are recovered and contemporary D-permits are retired.
Individuals and businesses with collections of old mine maps are invited to contact DMRM at (614) 265-6633 to loan or donate additional maps for inclusion in Ohio’s MineInfo GIS.
