LAKE ERIE SAFE BOATING COUNCIL RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

COLUMBUS, OH -- The Cleveland-based Lake Erie Safe Boating Council has received the West Marine Boating Safety Youth Program Award from the National Safe Boating Council, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft.

"This marks the fifth boating program in Ohio to receive this prestigious national award, which is more than any other state," said Jeff Hoedt, chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft. "The award to the Lake Erie Safe Boating Council also serves as recognition of the commitment to boating safety education shared among Ohio's statewide boating community."

The award was presented during the 2001 International Boating and Water Safety Summit recently held in Nashville, Tennessee.

Last year, the Lake Erie Safe Boating Council hosted North American Safe Boating Week in Cleveland in cooperation with the National Safe Boating Council, the ODNR Division of Watercraft, and other partnership organizations. Many of the activities focused on promoting boating safety for children.

This year's event is the Cleveland Boating & Fishing Fest to be held June 1-3 along the North Coast lakefront in celebration of National Fishing & Boating Week.
