To update an old saying, if you give someone a fish they will eat for a day, teach them to use “the ‘net,” (as in the Internet), and they won’t bother you for weeks. Once you start surfing, it can be hard to stop, and this is especially true when it comes to trolling for fishing information.

A good way to jump into this deep pool of angling information is to visit the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) web site at Ohiodnr.com Here you can catch up on fishing reports from around the state, tips on Lake Erie charter boats, maps of Ohio’s lakes, fish identification, fishing rules and regulations, and much more.

Ohio Anglers Online (www.great-lakes.org/ohang_lr.html) is a site assembled by the Great Lakes Sport Fishing Council. This site is a good jumping off spot, directing you to other relevant web sites with fishing information.

At ohiofishermen.com you’ll find information on building and repairing fishing gear, weather forecasts, how to fish for a variety of species and recipes for cooking your catch. gofishohio.com is a web site where anglers share ideas and information with each other. Both of these sites offer a good deal of information with minimal advertising.

Fly-fishermen will find kindred spirits at buckeyeflyfishers.com and at ncff.net. Both of these sites offer great advice and examples on how to tie flies and both have links to other sites for exploring this angling art.

If you’re looking to take advantage of Lake Erie’s bounty such as perch, walleye, smallmouth bass and more, type www.lecba.org in your address window and it will take you to the web site for the Lake Erie Charter Boat Association. Another great resource for charter boat information is charternet.com/fishers/ohio.html

For information about great fishing on Ohio’s southern-most body of water, surf over to theohioriver.com

There are plenty of sites for almost any species. If bass fishing is your passion check out smallmouth.org home of the Smallmouth Alliance. For muskellunge lovers: web.tusco.net/ohiohuskiemuskieclub and those angling for walleye should check out www.walleyehunter.com

While highlighting a few of the many Internet sources for fishing information, ODNR does not guarantee information provided on those websites nor does it endorse the commercial aspects of any site.

Now that you’ve reeled in your limit of fishing knowledge, get out and Fish Ohio!
