TOLEDO, OH -- Ohio citizens and organizations that have worked to enhance Lake Erie as the state's premiere natural resource are eligible to receive the 2003 Lake Erie Awards, according to the Ohio Lake Erie Commission.
Each year, the commission has sought to honor one individual and one organization that have shown superior dedication to protecting and restoring Lake Erie and its watershed. The annual Lake Erie Awards - depicting a likeness of the historic Marblehead Lighthouse - recognize that dedication in a tangible way.
Eight individuals and eight organizations have been recognized for their stewardship of Lake Erie since the commission established the Lake Erie Awards program in 1995. Nominating a person or organization for this award is one way of showing special appreciation for those who work to improve Lake Erie and support the goals of the Lake Erie Protection Fund.
Nomination forms for this year's awards are available by calling 419-245-2514 or from the commission's web site at www.epa.state.oh.us/oleo . All nomination forms must be completed and returned by 5 p.m. on Friday, August 8, in order to be eligible for consideration. Winners will be announced during the 2003 Coastweeks observance, August 23 to September 21.
The Ohio Lake Erie Commission was created to preserve Lake Erie's natural resources, enhance its water quality and promote economic development in the region. The director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency serves as the commission's chairman and the director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources serves as secretary. Additional members include the directors of the departments of transportation, development, health and agriculture.
