SCENIC GEAUGA COUNTY IS BACKDROP FOR CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF COURSE AT PUNDERSON STATE PARK
Resort golf course is only 25 miles east of Cleveland
COLUMBUS, OH - While it may be better known as a winter playground for skiers, snowmobilers and ice fisherman, Punderson State Park in Geauga County offers equally engaging warm weather activities, including play on its championship-rated 18-hole golf course.
The 72-par resort golf course stretches over 6,800 yards and features some especially long 3-and 5-par holes on the backside. It is long and demanding, but worth the effort, according to Punderson Golf Pro Kip Freeman. Hole No. 8, the course’s signature hole, is considered one of the toughest in Northeast Ohio with its narrow and wooded downhill fairway, with a dogleg over a pond to the green.
“This course will challenge even the most expert golfer,” Freeman said. “You can use every club in your bag when you play here.”

The golf course offers specials throughout the season, including discount rates for seniors, special group rates, weekday specials, twilight rates, and parent-child rates. Discounts are also offered for group outings. The 31-room Punderson Manor Resort & Conference Center also offers packages that include overnight accommodations, a round of golf and a meal. The course also features a putting green and pro shop.
Punderson State Park also offers 26 family cottages and a 196-site campground with electric hook-up. The park features three lakes, including the largest, Punderson Lake, which is great for boating and fishing. Anglers enjoy catches of bluegill, largemouth bass, rainbow and golden trout and catfish. Boat rentals are available at the marina.
Fourteen miles of trails take hikers through the park’s diverse woodlands surrounding Punderson Lake. Wild geranium, buttercup, blue-eyed grass and pennywort are just a few of the wildflowers that inhabit the area.
The lake is also home to a variety of shorebirds and waterfowl including great blue herons, Canada geese and wood ducks. Ohio's largest rodent, the beaver, as well as great horned owls, white-tailed deer, opossum and raccoons can be found within the park boundaries.
Punderson Lake, one of Ohio's few natural lakes, owes its origin to a massive ice sheet that once covered the area. It is a kettle lake, which was formed when a large block of ice broke off the glacier creating a depression that filled with meltwater. Punderson is the largest and deepest kettle lake in Ohio.
