BUCKEYE LAKE AND INDIAN LAKE STATE PARKS NAMED
VOLUNTEER PARKS OF THE YEAR
COLUMBUS, OH Successful volunteer efforts at Buckeye Lake State Park (Licking and Fairfield counties) and Indian Lake State Park (Logan County) earned each the recognition as “Volunteer Park of the Year” in 2006. Only once before, in 1992, have two parks shared the annual award.
This was the first year that volunteers at Buckeye Lake were nominated, having completed several beautification projects at the park. They also worked to strengthen relations with the Buckeye Lake community.
Volunteers at Indian Lake are regular competitors for the award. Last year, they reached a number of milestones most notably, construction of a new multi-purpose building in the campground. They also hosted the annual statewide volunteer campout, offering activities within the park and tours of surrounding points of interest.
“At a time when our parks system has experienced cutbacks, we appreciate the hard work and dedication of our quality volunteers even more,” said Dan West, chief of Ohio State Parks.
Volunteers at Buckeye Lake contributed more than 10,000 hours in service to the park last year.
Volunteers at Indian Lake contributed more than 20,000 hours.
State park volunteers donate their time in many ways, including providing campground host services, assisting park staff with building and maintaining trails, litter pickup and beautification projects, aiding naturalists with programs and animal care. Volunteer programs offer opportunities for people of all ages and interests to participate.
