NEW GUIDE PUBLISHED ON OHIO’S DRAGONFLIES AND DAMSELFLIES

COLUMBUS, OH - Wildlife enthusiasts interested in learning more about some of the state’s unique predator insects will want to check out The Dragonflies and Damselflies of Ohio, a new 364-page, fully illustrated guide. Edited by Robert Glotzhober and David McShaffrey, the new book is published by the Ohio Biological Survey, Inc. with financial support from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

Dragonflies and damselflies are aquatic insects commonly seen around ponds, lakes and streams. They are members of the insect order Odonata and feed on mosquitoes and small insects. Several members of this group are included in the state list of wildlife that are considered to be endangered, threatened, species of concern, special interest, extirpated or extinct in Ohio.

The book is edited to benefit both professional biologists and amateur naturalists.

Sections in this book include: 96 full-color photos of Ohio dragonflies and damselflies; the basic biology and life history of the dragonflies and damselflies; diagnostic keys for the adults to species level; keys for the larvae to the generic level; and species accounts with county dot maps for the 162 species now known from Ohio.

The book is the result of more than a decade of survey work and was funded in part from the ODNR Division of Wildlife's Wildlife Diversity and Endangered Species fund.

The Dragonflies and Damselflies of Ohio, a sturdy, paper-bound volume sells for $40. Shipping and handling for one book is $6. Ohio residents should add $2.30 state tax. For orders, please make checks payable to the Ohio Biological Survey, Inc. and send them to P.O. Box 21370, Columbus, OH 43221-0370.
