COLUMBUS, OH - Ohio boaters are encouraged to safely enjoy the states lakes and inland waterways during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend August 30 through September 2, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
Labor Day is one of Ohios busiest boating weekends and generally marks the ending of the traditional summer boating season. Properly wearing a life jacket, observing the rules of the road and preparedness should remain a priority for all boaters throughout the year, said Ken Alvey, acting chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft.
The ODNR says that many excellent boating opportunities can be enjoyed well into the fall months when waterways are less congested following the summer season. Pleasure boating, fishing and fall leaf viewing are among some of the boating opportunities that are enjoyed by boaters after Labor Day.
Some other safe boating tips include:
- Always wear an approved U.S. Coast Guard life jacket properly when boating;
- Avoid alcohol consumption;
- Be prepared to handle or assist in an emergency situation;
- Dont overload your boat with passengers and gear;
- Observe the boating rules of the road;
- File a float plan with a responsible person; and
- Be alert to all existing and forecasted weather conditions.
