COLUMBUS, OH -- A new map illustrating all of the state’s known areas of oil and gas production since the 1860s is now available, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
The map, created by the ODNR Division of Geological Survey, is available in digital or paper format. The map will be useful to individuals within the oil and gas industry, geology and academia, engineering and environmental consulting firms, solid waste districts, and city and regional planning departments.
On the map, oil and gas fields are color-coded, based on the geologic formation from which the oil or gas is derived. The map includes a brief description and a table listing all the oil and gas production fields. Digital files associated with the map allow users to perform searches, creating maps that contain the data they need, including production by years, type of production (oil vs. gas), and production depth.
The map and accompanying digital files can be used with other Geographic Information System (GIS) files to create an unlimited number of layered scenarios. This information can be used to research oil and gas exploration and carbon dioxide sequestration, and perform environmental assessments.
The map is available digitally or wall-size. Copies of the wall-size map may be ordered for $15 plus $1.02 tax (Ohio addresses only) and $4 handling (add $1.50 for mailing a rolled copy). The digital version of the map (including PDF file, and ESRI shape files) on CD-ROM, may be ordered for $25 plus $7.94 tax (Ohio addresses only) and $4 handling. Send payment to: ODNR Division of Geological Survey, 4383 Fountain Square Drive, Columbus, OH 43224-1362. Call 614-265-6576 with questions.
