NEW BOOK ON PRAIRIE MOTHS AND BUTTERFLIES PUBLISHED
ODNR Division of Wildlife helps fund new, scientific publication

COLUMBUS, OH - A book about moths and butterflies found in native tallgrass prairies in the United States is now available from the Ohio Biological Survey (OBS), thanks to financial support from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

A portion of the research monies and publication costs for Contributions to the Understanding of Tallgrass Prairie-Dependent Butterflies and Moths (Lepidoptera) and their Biogeography in the United States was provided by the Division’s Wildlife Diversity and Endangered Species Program.

The 143-page publication details prairie-dependent butterflies and moths and costs $34.38. The book can be ordered from the Ohio Biological Survey, P.O. Box 21370, Columbus, OH  43221-0370.

Accounts of 109 prairie-dependent species in 14 families, east of the 100TH meridian, are presented in detail.  Research was conducted in six Midwestern states on these butterflies and moths, some of which have a distribution extending to the Gulf and Atlantic coasts.  Issues and concerns relevant to the conservation of and management strategies for invertebrates, particularly Lepidoptera, are also discussed in detail.

The Division of Wildlife’s Wildlife Diversity and Endangered Species Fund is used for a variety of conservation efforts such as the research that went into this publication, education and information programs for children, and habitat development and acquisition.  Funds are generated from the sale of the Cardinal license plate (available for purchase from local deputy registrars or by calling 1-888-PLATES3) and by contributions to the Ohio State Income Tax Checkoff Program.
