COLUMBUS -- Glen D. Alexander, who served the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) as chief of Ohio State Parks from 1991 to 1997, is returning to ODNR this January as the department's assistant director. ODNR Director Sam Speck, announcing the appointment today, said: "In his previous service here and throughout a distinguished career in state and national parks management, Glen Alexander has built a nationally recognized reputation for leadership and innovation. We are delighted to welcome him back to ODNR, where he can put those skills to work once again for the people of Ohio."
Alexander, who is currently executive director of the National Association of State Park Directors, served with the National Park Service before becoming Ohio's state parks chief in 1991. Under his leadership, Ohio State Parks earned the National Park and Recreation Association's first-ever Gold Medal for Excellence as the best state park system in America.
A native of Chicago, Alexander holds a master's degree from the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business.
As ODNR's assistant director, Alexander will help administer the department's statewide responsibilities, including: management of Ohio's 74 state parks, 20 state forests and 127 state nature preserves; oversight of hunting, fishing and recreational boating in the state; promotion of recycling and litter prevention; management of the state's water resources; study of Ohio's geological and mineral resources; advancement of soil and water conservation practices; regulation of oil- and gas-well drilling; regulation of mining and industrial minerals production, and the reclamation of surface-mined lands. He succeeds J. William Moody, who retired as assistant director of ODNR earlier this year.
