OHIO’S MINERAL INDUSTRIES PRODUCED AND SOLD COMMODITIES
VALUED AT MORE THAN $2 BILLION IN 2003, ODNR REPORTS
Annual report of industrial mineral activities now available at ohiodnr.com
COLUMBUS, OH - Ohio’s mineral industries produced and sold commodities valued at more than $2 billion dollars in 2003, while employing about10,000 people, according to a report recently released by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Geological Survey.
Summaries of coal, petroleum, and industrial-mineral activities in Ohio as well as detailed directories of coal, sand and gravel, limestone and dolomite, clay and shale, sandstone and conglomerate, salt, gypsum and peat operations can be found in the Survey’s Report on Ohio Mineral Industries.
The report, which features an interactive map of mining operations in the state, is now available online at ohiodnr.com. The document will prove a valuable tool for local government, academia, the mineral industry and its supporting industries.
“The updated interactive map that accompanies the report provides an improved method for quickly researching coal and industrial mineral activities in Ohio,” said State Geologist Thomas Berg. “The standard map navigation tools included allow users to graphically access basic information about individual mines or groups of mines.”
Information available from the interactive map includes company name and phone number, commodities produced, and tonnage produced or sold during the calendar year. The digital map is updated annually by the Division of Geological Survey and is an important part of the division’s integrated geographic information system.
The report and interactive map are available online at ohiodnr.com. In addition, a limited number of reports are available on compact disc and can be ordered for $13.18 (including shipping, handling and tax) by calling 614-265-6576 or writing the ODNR Division of Geological Survey, 2045 Morse Rd, Bldg C, Columbus, Ohio 43229-6693.
