ODNR SEEKING ADDITIONAL HUNTER EDUCATION INSTRUCTORS --
SERIES OF WEEKEND WORKSHOPS TO BE HELD TO CERTIFY NEW VOLUNTEERS

COLUMBUS, OH -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will hold a series of workshops beginning this spring to train volunteer hunter and trapper education instructors. The workshops, coordinated by the ODNR Division of Wildlife, provide immediate certification for those who wish to teach Ohio hunter and trapper education courses. The first weekend workshop is being held March 31-April 2 at Burr Oak State Park.

Class size is limited to 40 participants for each training workshop. There is no fee to attend the training sessions, which also include meals, lodging, and course materials. Those persons who want to become certified volunteer hunter and trapper education instructors must be at least 21 years old and have previously completed a hunter or trapper education course to participate in this specialize training workshop.

“This is the third year for our instructor academies and they have been very successful. We currently have about 1,200 volunteer hunter and trapper education instructors, but we are still in need of more qualified instructors,” said Phil King, a hunter education program specialist in the Division of Wildlife.

Successful completion of this workshop leads to immediate certification as a volunteer instructor, which substantially reduces from six to eight weeks the amount of time once needed to become a certified instructor.

Each workshop begins at 7 p.m. on a Friday and concludes at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Participants are required to submit a $25 deposit at the time of registration, which is returned at the beginning of the workshop.

Participants must register at least two weeks prior to the scheduled date of each workshop. Registration forms may be obtained by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE.

Dates and locations for the volunteer instructor training workshops are:

* March 31-April 2 at Burr Oak State Park Lodge (Athens County).

* April 7-9 at Camp Palmer (Fulton County)

* August 18-20 at Recreation Unlimited (Delaware County)

* September 15-17 at Camp Cotubic (Logan County)

A special one-day training academy is being held March 11 in Trumbull County for instructor candidates who have travel limitations.
