PERRYSVILLE, OH -- Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation will begin routine maintenance work on four underground natural gas storage wells and three gas pipelines on Mohican-Memorial State Forest in late February. The company has ownership of mineral rights to the wells which date back before the creation of the state forest in 1928.
The work will involve removing trees in a circular area around the four wells for improved access and safer well operating conditions. The reconditioning project will include the excavation of soil around the wells.
Columbia Gas has also informed state forest officials they intend, as part of their natural gas facility maintenance program, to treat with herbicides the immediate area around its 54 leased gas wellheads.
The gas storage wells are located north of SR 97 and the gas lines are in the vicinity of the Mohican Juvenile Correctional Facility.
Well site work will include road improvements to reduce water erosion and improve access. Improvement and clearing work will be performed in the spring and well conditioning will be conducted during the summer.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources manages the 4,525-acre Mohican-Memorial State Forest and the separate 1,294-acre Mohican State Park.
